About the event
"Without Charles Back, the Swartland would still be regarded as a rural backwater" Tim Atkin MW
We are delighted to welcome Charles Back, owner of Fairview winery and founder of Spice Route, to host a very special tasting featuring wines from both wineries.
Fairview is credited with bringing Mediterrean varities to the Cape. Charles joined his Grandfathers winery in 1978 and in 2014 he was awarded the IWC's Lifetime Achievement Award aged just 58. Recognising his work championing varieties better suited to the Capes dry climate, lesser known regions, earlier picking dates and restoration of old vines.
In 1998 he tasted an exceptional Sauvignon Blanc in Swartland and immmediatley purchased the land and formed Spice Route winery. The flagship wine of the estate 'Chakalaka' belnds six varieites to produce an intense Rhône style red.
A chanceto be guided through some amazing wines by a legend of South African wine making.
